• We recommended that the first orthodontic check up be at age 7 years of age (endorsed by the South African and American Associations of Orthodontists (www.aao.org)


• First Phase (Phase I) treatment. At this time, orthodontists recognizes developing problems and employs an interceptive approach within a defined period of time and this can reduce (or even eliminate) the period of Phase II treatment. 


• Consultation for Full Phase Orthodontics for adolescents should ideally be sought when the last set of 'baby' molar teeth are still present in the mouth.


• Adult orthodontic treatment is very common these days and absolutely socially acceptable. Whether a full course of treatment; preparative work for the restorative dentist; correction of tooth position for optimum or improved (periodontal/ gum and supporting tissues , ie, bone ) health; preparatory orthodontics for orthognathic surgery; or for the confidence of a winning smile. 


• Braces are not only silver anymore either! We now have clear brackets, clear aligners to move teeth without braces brackets ( as Invisalign ) ; lingual braces (braces on the inner aspect of the teeth) and white arch wires. This gives you the choice of the most discreet way to polish your smile.
